The FOS has learned that the Florida Legislature is considering an amendment to deal with the insurance crisis in Florida that would provide an across the board assessment on all lines of insurance sold in the state. For physicians that would also include any medical liability policy they may be carrying. We are requesting the Legislature to consider exempting medical liability premiums from the across the board assessment since this will be an additional burden on physicians as professionals. As business owners, Florida's physicians are already feeling the crippling effect of the insurance crisis. As citizens, Florida's physicians will feel the impact of any statutory assessment on insurance lines to address the crisis. However, physicians should not be reqiured to pay an additional burden due simply to their profession. Florida's medical liability premiums remain the highest in the nation. Now is not the time to increase these rates.
Please consider contacting your respective members of the Florida Legislature and request that physicians be kept out of this legislation. If you need information on how to contact your legislators, please contact our office, 813-948-8660.
The FOS would like to thank the members of the association who reached out to the Legislature on this topic. We were successful in removing this assessment from the final reform package that passed the legislature. Thank you very much for your assistance.
